I’m typing this on my Slate 7. At the end of a week long trip to Hawaii in January, I dropped it on the plane while it was plugged in. That seemed to be the start of the problem, because after that i t went completely black the next day and refused to acknowledge it was being charged.
Unfortunately the HP site is a stupid mess and I was unable to get any support. This refurbished replacement of my original unit (which had the micro USB port physically fail) was just past the 1year warranty mark, so I figured I was out of luck. I fiddled with it off and on over the next few months and even tracked down a torx driver that was small enough to disassemble it so I could poke at the parts and look for a short.
Eventually I was ready to give up but noticed that when I plugged it in to my laptop to charge that Windows made the unrecognized connection sound. So it wasn’t completely electronically dead. I let it charge and tried a few times. After a few failed attempts to start where I got the HP logo screen but not the boot up graphic, something finally clicked and it loaded. To my amazement, all my old data was still here.
So now I’m cautiously using it. I need to do another backup of it, but I don’t plan to keep anything critical on it. So for now it is a convenient tool for blogging.
